Old Orchard Beach QTVR
Being unemployed has its advantages, as it turns out. Like catching up on some of things that you've been meaning to do for two years or more, say. And so, as part of that effort, here's an image I shot at least that long ago (or was it three years ago?) in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
Heading into Old Orchard Beach, it would have been hard, for me, not to think of the Magnetic Fields song that shares its name (that would be track 7 from The Wayward Bus, and, man, that's a good song). I didn't even know it was a real place until arriving there. I didn't end up seeing much of it, either, outside of the inn.
According to their website, The Old Orchard Beach Inn was the first inn in Maine (it was originally Ye Olde Staples Inn), built in the 1730's. It's a bed and breakfast now, and though I'm not generally a bed and breakfasty kind of person (like Sarah Vowell says, it's the breakfast part that makes me nervous), this place had a lot more character, for instance, than your average Motel 6.
Enjoy. More to come soon.
Update: It seems that Firefox 1.5 (at least for OS X) kinda freaks out when you try to view the QTVR. There is a slightly more stable page here, but once you scroll it becomes unstable, too (WTF!). Earlier versions of Firefox don't have this problem, so it looks like it was a problem introduced with the new version. I'm looking into it.
Update 2: The problem appears to be limited to the OS X version of Firefox 1.5. No word yet on a forthcoming solution.
Update 3: Firefox 1.5.0.1 for Mac OS X fixes the freaking out.
